the purpose of this site is to provide basic information about the Houston Rodeo, an annual event that features a rodeo competition, livestock show, horse competitions, concerts and other activities. A brief history of the Houston rodeo as well as explanations of each of the major events will be featured throughout the website.
The Houston Rodeo started its life in 1932 as the Houston Fat Stock Show and Livestock Exposition. 80 years later, it is still a major spot for rodeo and livestock events nationwide. Over the years, more attractions and events have been added, such as concerts and school art auctions. For more info, please see the History page to see how the Houston Rodeo has changed over 80 years.
Cows, goats, rabbits, and chickens are some of the livestock that are shown and judged in the livestock portion of the Rodeo. After the judging, the animals go to auction and the blue ribbons and grand champions can fetch a pretty penny. The animals are often raised by kids and young adults in the 4-h or Future farmers or america programs. To see for info about the judging process, please visit the Livestock show page.
The Rodeo portion encompasses several different events including Bull riding, calf scramble, and tie-down roping. These events are the stars of the Houston rodeo and often the first things that pop into someones head when they hear the word "rodeo". Each of these events have their own rules for judging the performance of the participants. To see these guidelines explained briefly please see the Rodeo section of the website.
